June 18, 2002- Proton Energy Systems, Inc., the Rocky Hill, Conn., hydrogen generator and regenerative fuel cell company, repots it has delivered a renewable energy-based HOGEN hydrogen generator to Birka Energi, in conjunction with ABB, to fuel an environmental information center.
Proton's HOGEN hydrogen generator, to be installed at the Environmental Information Centre in Hammarby Sjostad Stockholm, Sweden, will demonstrate a sustainable energy system that generates hydrogen directly from a photovoltaic solar array.
The generator also has the flexibility to connect directly to the electrical grid. Birka Energi and ABB's Group Services Center AB, Corporate Research, selected Proton's hydrogen generator as a fuel source for their fuel cell systems to generate power for the center.
According to Fredrik Robelius, program manager for Birka Energi, "Birka Energi develops and tests leading-edge technology in order to find the energy technology of tomorrow. We believe the energy system of tomorrow will use more renewable energy than today and the system in the Environmental Information Centre is a step towards tomorrow's system. Proton's HOGEN hydrogen generator's ability to directly use a renewable energy source is a crucial and necessary part of the system."
Proton's President and CEO Walter "Chip" Schroeder commented, "Energy users want to incorporate renewable energy sources and fuel cells into their facility designs. Our generators offer the breakthrough capability to transform renewable power into ultra-high purity hydrogen fuel at high pressure. When fed into a fuel cell, this hydrogen produces electricity without pollution and without depletions. As part of Birka Energi's facility, we are providing a practical demonstration of sustainable energy."
Birka Energi is Sweden's leading energy company in terms of customer numbers. It is the third largest in terms of production capacity. In addition to electrical sales, electricity distribution, and power production, Birka includes the major heating business in the Nordic area. Fortum, one of the Nordic countries' leading energy companies, owns Birka.
Proton Energy Systems, Inc. ( www.protonenergy.com ) designs, develops and manufactures Proton Exchange Membrane, or PEM, electrochemical products that it employs in hydrogen generating devices and in regenerative fuel cell systems that function as power generating and energy storage devices.
Proton's HOGEN and FuelGen hydrogen generators produce hydrogen from electricity and water in a clean and efficient process using proprietary PEM technology. Proton is currently manufacturing and delivering HOGEN hydrogen generators to customers for use in commercial applications.
The company’s UNIGEN regenerative fuel cell systems, which it is currently developing, will combine Proton's hydrogen generation technology with a fuel cell power generator to create an energy device that is able to produce and store the hydrogen fuel it can later use to generate electricity.
ABB ( www.abb.com ) is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. ABB has 152,000 employees in more than 100 countries.
